Maria comes to Solano Law Firm with several years of immigration experience. While her practice has had a focus on removal defense and family-based petitions, she has experience with many areas of immigration, including affirmative asylum, DACA, U Visas, Naturalization and Consular Processing. Maria also has a strong base in criminal law and trial advocacy from her 6 years as a prosecutor in the Greater Atlanta area, specifically in the counties of Fulton and Cobb.
Maria is an active member of the Georgia Hispanic Bar Association, now serving as the Chairperson of the GHBA Board of Directors. She is a member of AILA and the HNBA, and she also serves on the GSU College of Law Alumni Council Executive Board.
Maria devotes a great deal of time to mentoring young lawyers and law students through organizations like the Georgia Latino Law Foundation. Maria has served as a panelist for NLLSA’s National Conference, speaking on the issues of Criminal Justice Reform and ‘Crimigration’. She was also invited to be a panelist at NLLSA’s 1st Annual Southeastern Region Conference at Ole Miss Law School, in April 2019.
Because of her various involvements with giving back to the legal community, Maria was featured in the GSU Law Alumni Magazine Women in Leadership issue in 2018. Maria was appointed to the Georgia State Commission on Interpreters in 2017. She was the recipient of a Trailblazer Award at the 2018 Advocacy for Action Empowerment Summit. In 2019 and 2020 Maria was named to Atlanta Magazine’s Top 500 Most Influential Leaders.
Maria received her JD degree from GSU College of Law, graduating cum laude, in 2011. During law school, she worked as a legal intern at the LAA and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia. She served as the president of the Hispanic Student Bar Association and was also actively involved in the Student Trial Lawyers Association.
Maria is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, born to Guatemalan parents, and is fluent in Spanish. Prior to becoming an attorney, Maria spent over a decade as an educator, teaching middle and high school Social Studies in Atlanta.
